About the Artist

Jamie Kirk (b.'95) is an artist from London, living and working in the North West of England.

Jamie Kirk’s abstract paintings are defined by a dynamic interplay between gestural immediacy and meticulous construction. Layered and complex, his works balance raw, expressive mark-making with a precise attention to surface and structure.

Kirk’s practice operates at the intersection of self-reflection and cultural critique, embedding personal and collective narratives within a visually charged, highly textured field.

He is currently exploring themes of a dystopian future shaped by the ecological and cultural consequences of the Plastic Age. Integrating carefully sourced reference imagery with gestural brushwork, he constructs liminal spaces that function as both personal reckoning and wider cultural critique — purgatorial landscapes where remnants of the past collide with speculative visions of an uncertain future.

Using digital technologies and the spontaneity of gestural abstraction, Kirk disrupts conventional hierarchies of image-making, embracing chance occurrences and moments of instability which fluctuate within a deliberate compositional framework.

This balance between spontaneity and control remains a defining element of his process and he frequently use stencils and masking to create moments of unpredictable visual complication, therefore allowing the painting itself to suggest, or rather dictate, its own resolution.

Jamie has recently joined the prestigious Apollo Painting School in Manchester. Apollo was founded by the internationally renowned artist Louisa Giovanelli, gallerist and curator Alice Amati, and artist and academic Dr. Ian Hartshorne. Only five artists are taken on in each cohort so it is a mark of Jamie's standing as an artist to have been selected.
