Jayne Anita Smith

West Yorkshire, UK

About the artist

Jayne Anita Smith's practice concerns the threat from an historically patriarchal society where spirituality is at odds with a contemporary focus on physicality and material wealth.

Smith has exhibited widely across the UK and internationally in Hong Kong and Miami, including group and solo exhibitions with Coates and Scarry in London, and in group shows with BoLee Gallery and Bearspace, London. Her work is held in several private collections in the UK and USA. Smith has been selected for the RA Summer Show in 2019 and 2015 and has been shortlisted for a number of prizes, including, Mostyn Open, Threadneedle Prize, National Open Art Competition and Beep painting prize.

Smith has taken on a number of artist residencies, including a 3 month self funded residency at Porthmeor Studios, St.Ives. In 2017 she completed a year on the Turps Correspondence Painting Programme. In 2016 curated an artist led project 'Walking into memory' where a group of artists made and exhibited work that responded to the empty space of a derelict Victorian house.

Born in London, Smith relocated to Cornwall where she completed her BA (Hons) Fine Art at University College Falmouth in 2009. She now lives and works from her studio in West Yorkshire.
