Diana Terry
Contemporary painter, Manchester, UK
About the Artist
Diana Terry was born, lives and works in Greater Manchester.
Diana is passionately engaged with her native land which inspires her paintings and prints. This city is surrounded by the Pennines and is the place to consider the narrative between humanity and the environment. The recent artworks are about quarrying and the use of the stone in buildings.
These often close focus paintings of rock formations register a profound sense of place and embody her principal preoccupations both formal and intellectual.
From the research at the rock face she draws, take rubbings of the surfaces and presses clay into the rocks. She uses textured marks to build up rich layers of materials, including using gesso, collage and inks in the drawings which develop into larger works.
The paintings are of the ochre, russet and green terrain punctuated by rock escarpments, caves and boulders. They have a slow quiet meditative spirit. Her colourful and vibrant surfaces resonate with the land, evoking the deep geological memories ingrained in the Pennines.
Having worked in the education and heritage sectors she has been a full time artist for over five years developing a loyal following. Her paintings are in private and public collections from Inverness to Cornwall and also the USA and New Zealand.
