About the Artist

In a life dedicated to figuration, Jamie Frost searches for meaning within material and form, projecting a dual sense of the figure as a powerful and vulnerable force. There is a symbiosis in his studio between cycles of sculpture and painting, one activity deepening the possibilities of the other. Finding fallibility at the core of human experience, Jamie is determined that this should be expressed beautifully.

Ideas are developed directly from the live model, working simply with gesture and colour on small studies. In the painted works that emerge from this, clean open colour fields are occupied by bold figure-marks. The activity on the surface is sparing but powerful, suggesting all that is bodily. Coiled up energy is barely released. Sopping wet brush marks depict the grubby, tender heaviness of fleshy beings full of hopes, fears and desires.

In his work we see life reflected without judgement or romanticisation. Each brush mark is enhanced with careful modelling of light and shade, introducing physicality, depth and mass to the initial gestures. We are left with a fugitive sense of the figures and any implied narrative. The imagery can seem perilous and compassionate in equal measure, encouraging us to explore our own sense of self as the figures shift and coalesce in front of us.

Jamie's work has been shown widely, including a touring solo exhibition of sculpture and drawing. Features and artist interviews include Considering Art podcast, Creative Boom, The Yorkshire Post, The Guardian, The Times, Daily Telegraph, among others. Recently he was shortlisted for the Alpine Fellowship Visual Arts Prize, the Cotswold Sculpture Park ‘sculpture of the year’ award and the New Light Sculpture Prize. Jamie has received accolades for drawing and sculpture which include membership of the Royal Society of Sculptors and the Society of Portrait Sculptors’ Talos award.
